"Charity" depicts a woman caring for and protecting young children- giving them her nurturing and knowledge. The nurturing is represented by her bared breasts...illustrating her willingness to give of herself for their well being. Under her left foot is an overturned jug with gold and silver coins flowing out of it. This symbol reveals that there is no cost too great for their happiness. By her right foot a boy is leaning on a pile of books, showing her intent to educate them and give them the gift of knowledge. German Schultüten

Germany has a wonderful and fun tradition to celebrate a child's first day of school: each child receives a "schultüte", or school cone, filled with supplies and other goodies. Being that I am a German American, I wanted my children to enjoy such a celebration! Two years ago, my daughter received her school cone and now it is my son's turn, although I'll have to wait a little longer to give him his. Here are a couple of photos from 2007:

her first day of school! There are places that sell pre-made school cones (such as Magic Cabin toys and Kindercone) and I have seen sites with instructions on how to make them yourself. Just google the topic and your children can enjoy this fun tradition too!
